Are you suffering from Nosocomephobia? Or Tomophobia maybe?
You’re not alone.
Do hospitals freak you out? Now, during the Covid-19 pandemic, even more so? You may be suffering from Nosocomephobia, the fear of hospitals, which, according to research, is quite common. Even U.S. President Richard Nixon was said to suffer from this phobia. According to reports, he refused treatment for a blood clot because he was convinced that he would not get out alive.
Tomophobia is similar. This phobia refers to fear or anxiety caused by upcoming surgical procedures and/or medical interventions.
We learnt these ’big phobia words’ from a family (guests at our lodge) whose aging mother was in Sunninghill Hospital for a medical procedure. She had a life-long fear of hospitals and much therapy was needed to persuade her to enter the hospital gates.
At our lodge, we have had numerous families stay with us while a relative received medical treatment. Over the 25 years we have been in business, out-of-towners, people from Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique – one couple from Kenya – have come, with their families, for chemo and other specialized therapy or surgery.
What most warmed our hearts was the little girl from Nelspruit whose parents brought her to Sandton for a heart procedure at the Sunninghill Hospital. She was tired and listless and totally out of sorts when she arrived at the lodge. After her op and hospital stay she was transformed into a lively, happy child, who would not be parted from a teddy bear that our staff had given her as a ‘home’ coming present.

Cannot praise it enough
Gerard, Jill and their staff are just superb. I stayed here for a month, mostly alone as my husband was in hospital nearby. I was deeply concerned about his health, shocked at what had happened, fighting with the insurance company and a 1000s of miles from home – yet their kindness, care and thoughtfulness got me through it.

Getting the details just right with a personal touch
My husband and I stayed here for a week at the end of May when I had an unexpected medical situation that required care at the nearby Sunninghill Hospital. I believe my husband said it best when he said that we were treated as if we were the only guests, despite the fact that they were fully booked all while we were there. I don’t know how they managed it, except that each employee seemed genuinely invested in our well-being. You can really tell when you are being looked after by people who take pride in their role as gracious hosts.

Wonderful peaceful stay.
I’m from out of town. My husband had a very serious operation at sunninghill hospital. Staying at Rivonia Bed and Breakfast was the perfect place to stay. Close to hospital, shops and restaurants. The garden is peaceful and I managed to get rest during my husband recovery. Thank you to the staff and management.
